Claim your Australian Ethical Super after leaving Australia
If you worked in Australia on a temporary visa and you’ve now left, you may be able to withdraw
your Australian Ethical Super balance as a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP).
Who can apply for an Australian Ethical Super DASP?
You may be eligible to claim your Australian Ethical Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP) if:
You have left Australia and don’t intend to live there, and
Your temporary visa has expired or has been cancelled, and
You are not an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen, and
Super contributions were paid into your Australian Ethical Super account while you were working in Australia.
Australian Ethical note: New Zealand citizens cannot use the DASP process due to the Trans-Tasman arrangement.
They usually need a Trans-Tasman transfer to a KiwiSaver instead.
What you need to prepare for an Australian Ethical DASP claim
1
Identity documents
Passport details (passport number, full name, date of birth).
If your Australian Ethical balance is above $5,000, certified copies of passport/ID are commonly required.
If overseas, certification is often done by a Notary Public or an Australian Embassy/Consulate.
2
Visa information
Your visa subclass/type.
Evidence your visa has expired or was cancelled (as required for a DASP claim).
3
Your Australian Ethical account details
Australian Ethical Super member number (if available).
Ensure your details match Australian Ethical records to avoid verification delays.
4
Payment information
Australian Ethical usually prefers payment to an Australian bank account in your own name.
If you don’t have one, they may accept international details depending on policy.
Common reasons Australian Ethical claims get delayed
Certification missing / unclear / wrong wording
Name mismatch between passport and Australian Ethical member profile
Visa expiry/cancellation evidence not readable or not provided
Payment details not in the applicant’s own name
Old contact details causing missed follow-up requests
Tip: Update your Australian Ethical email and phone before leaving Australia if possible.
Australian Ethical Super unique requirements
1
Ethical investment charter
Australian Ethical invests according to an ethical charter. This doesn’t change your DASP eligibility, but it explains
why your money was invested in certain industries and not others.
2
$5,000+ balances
For balances of $5,000 or more, Australian Ethical generally requires certified proof of identity and may ask for extra immigration
evidence, especially for paper or complex claims.
3
Unclaimed super transfers
If you don’t claim within certain timeframes, your Australian Ethical balance may be transferred to the ATO as unclaimed super.
In that case, you need to claim from the ATO instead of directly from Australian Ethical.
Document standards (strict)
Passport copy must be clear and complete (photo page + details)
If certification is required, wording and stamp/signature must be correct
Visa evidence must show expiry or cancellation clearly
All documents should match your Australian Ethical member profile details
Tip: If you are outside Australia, a Notary Public or Australian Embassy/Consulate is commonly used for certification.
Account closure & insurance
When you withdraw your super, your account balance reduces to $0 and any cover linked to the account may stop.
If you still plan to keep super in Australia or open another account, consider how this affects insurance before proceeding.

Sometimes yes, but an Australian bank account is usually the easiest and fastest option.
Generally no. NZ citizens usually need a Trans-Tasman transfer to a KiwiSaver scheme instead of DASP.
