If you worked in Australia on a temporary visa and you’ve now left, you may be able to withdraw
your HESTA super as a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP).
You may be eligible to claim your HESTA Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP) if:
You have left Australia and don’t intend to live there, and
Your temporary visa has expired or has been cancelled, and
You are not an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen, and
Super contributions were paid into your HESTA account while you were working in Australia.
HESTA note: New Zealand citizens cannot use the DASP process due to the Trans-Tasman arrangement.
They usually need a Trans-Tasman transfer request instead of DASP.
What you need to prepare for a HESTA DASP claim
1
Identity documents
Passport details (passport number, full name, date of birth).
If your HESTA balance is above $5,000, certified copies of passport/ID are commonly required.
If overseas, certification is often done by a Notary Public or an Australian Embassy/Consulate.
2
Visa information
Your visa subclass/type.
Evidence your visa has expired or was cancelled (as required for a DASP claim).
3
Your HESTA account details
HESTA member number (if available).
Ensure your details match HESTA records to avoid verification delays.
4
Payment information
HESTA usually prefers payment to an Australian bank account in your own name.
If you don’t have one, HESTA may accept international bank details depending on policy.
Common reasons HESTA claims get delayed
Certification missing / unclear / wrong wording
Name mismatch between passport and HESTA member profile
Visa expiry/cancellation evidence not readable or not provided
Payment details not in the applicant’s own name
Old contact details causing missed follow-up requests
Tip: Update your HESTA email and phone before leaving Australia if possible.
HESTA unique requirements
1
Unclaimed super transfers
If you don’t claim within certain timeframes, eligible balances may be transferred to the ATO as unclaimed super.
If that happens, you will need to claim from the ATO instead of directly from HESTA.
2
New Zealand citizens
NZ citizens generally cannot use DASP and may need a Trans-Tasman transfer request instead.
3
Match your details
Even small spelling differences in name or date-of-birth can trigger extra checks and delays.
Ensure your passport, visa and HESTA profile details match.
Document standards (strict)
Passport copy must be clear and complete (photo page + details)
If certification is required, wording and stamp/signature must be correct
Visa evidence must show expiry or cancellation clearly
All documents should match your HESTA member profile details
Tip: If you are outside Australia, a Notary Public or Australian Embassy/Consulate is commonly used for certification.
Account closure & insurance
When you withdraw your super, your account balance reduces to $0 and any cover linked to the account may stop.
If you still plan to keep super in Australia or open another account, consider how this affects insurance before proceeding.
